On July 20, 1933, at the Red Crown Tavern and Tourist Court in Kansas City, famed outlaws Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow checked into the small facility and left in a blaze of gunfire. As part of Platte County’s 175th Anniversary, the Symposium and Road Tour will examine these events on May 24th. The 10am to noon Symposium and Road Tour is an educational and vintage automotive day.
The actual symposium is from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm in The Improv Comedy Club in Zona Rosa. The educational program tells what really happened on July 21, 1933 when 13 lawmen had the notorious Barrow Gang surrounded at the Red Crown Tavern and Tourist Camp. Following the event, a Road Tour of more than 100 vintage automobiles will travel the same Platte County roads used by the Barrow Gang during their escape in 1933. Another important part of the symposium is a collection of artifacts and documents about the Red Crown affair. They include weapons, bullets and items stolen by the Barrow gang. Historian Jim Spawn says, “Anyone who may have a Red Crown collectible is asked to display them at the symposium.”
