Health Savings Accounts

Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) are designed to allow the payment for qualified medical expenses of the HSA owner and his or her family on a tax-free basis. Unlike a Flexible Spending Account (FSA), an HSA is not a “use it or lose it” account.
 

To be eligible for an HSA, an individual must be covered under a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP), not covered by another health plan that is not a HDHP (some exception may apply), not enrolled in Medicare, and not eligible to be claimed as a dependent on another individual’s Federal Income Tax return. Contribution limits vary and are affected by the type of HDHP the HSA owner has and the status of the owner’s eligibility.
