An increase in phone scams in Plattsburg recently involving receiving a call from some type of authority (Police. Immigration, Embassy Person) saying that a loved one of the Victim called was in jail and in need of Bond or Fine money to be released.
In some instances they will let the Victim talk to someone who identifies themselves as their loved one but cannot give a name or detailed knowledge that would identify them as the loved one, ususally saying they can’t talk or the line is recorded.
The ‘Official” then takes back over the phone and instructs the Victim and will began to get information which can result in how much money they think you can pay as to what amount they will ask for. They then will instruct you to withdrawal money from your account and send a money order to a specific name and city location.
To Prevent this type of fraud, neye give out personal information over the phone unless you know the person with whom you are talking to.
Have a family safe word that only family members know that can verify a loved ones identity.
Never send money unless you can confirm the story through a known family member that YOU call.
